FAMILY REUNION TIME

July: Our family celebrated together with a big family gathering near our home in the greater San Diego area. It was fun to see everyone and show them the sights of our beautiful city.

Grandbaby news!

Our daughter and husband announced their great news: another Krentz grandbaby will join the family in December! I had better get that quilt started, right??!

early September: What's On my Design Wall?

I belong to a small quilting bee. We have embarked upon a "go green Recycling project"—inspired by the wonderful men's shirts available at local GoodWill Industries and other 2nd-hand stores. They are arranged by color......oh, what a selection!

Thrift Shop Shirts

Quilts made from shirtings have their own unique personality. They have a calm, easy-to-use character, and appeal to both men and women. Their colors are typically more subdued, so I added plaid and striped yardage of brighter colors to build the color palette.

Each oarticipating bee member purchased 2nd hand clothing, plus collected additional compatible fabrics from her stash. All of the shirts and yardage was laundered, then cut apart to yield yardage without seams, cuffs, etc.

We are each cutting from the entire collective "stash", making our own preferred quilt or design. I have several in mind..... no, they are NOT my own quilt patterns, but designs by friends whom I admire.

My first design is from Anita Grossman Solomon's book, Rotary Cutting Revolution. I really enjoy Anita's great cutting and assembly strategies.

This design is Anita's "Self-Mitered Log Cabin". I sewed 80 eight-inch blocks, arranged in a classic log cabin barn-raising setting. I am planning to add a pieced border; the quilt top is a glowing work-in-progress on the design wall.

Why, offer a land-lubber's special event, of course! You have seen pix of the two quilt top examples in previous newsletters. Come create your own quilt top from an ocean-themed or floral-themed kit, complete with custom pre-fused, laser-cut Hawaiian appliqué.

For all of you in the midwest, please mark your calendars to come and enjoy the great quilts and workshops in Des Moines! I will present 4 workshops, plus a presentation lecture/trunk-show.
